Climate Characteristics of Yad Mordechai

General Overview

Yad Mordechai enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate characteristic of the southern coastal plain. The kibbutz's geographical location, a short distance from the Mediterranean Sea and close to the northern Negev, grants it a blend of moderating maritime influence along with slight desert features, manifested mainly in daytime dryness and noticeable temperature differences.

Summer Season and Warm Months

Summer in Yad Mordechai is long, hot, and very humid. Average daytime temperatures range from 31°C to 33°C (88-91°F), and heat stress is clearly felt due to high humidity levels coming from the sea. However, in the evening hours, a sea breeze often blows, slightly relieving the oppressive feeling.

Winter Season and Precipitation

The winter in the area is mild and comfortable in terms of temperature, but is characterized by concentrated rain events. The average annual precipitation is approximately 450 to 500 mm. Frost days are extremely rare, and the temperature on a typical winter day is pleasant, ranging from 18°C to 20°C (64-68°F).

Transition Seasons and Special Phenomena

Transition seasons are characterized by extreme instability. The area is frequently affected by heavy "Sharav" (heatwave) events accompanied by haze and dry easterly winds coming from the desert. Conversely, in autumn and spring, very strong localized rain events may occur, potentially causing flows in local streams.

 

Weather in Yad Mordechai by Month

January

January is the coldest and rainiest month of the year. Daytime temperatures range around 18°C (64°F), and at night they drop to an average of 9°C (48°F). This is the peak of the rainy season, characterized by winter systems bringing plenty of rain and westerly winds.

February

Winter continues in full force with temperatures similar to January. February is a month when the ground is saturated and the vegetation in and around the kibbutz is at its peak green bloom. Rainy days are still frequent, though there may be longer breaks of pleasant sunshine.

March

March marks the transition to spring with a gradual daytime temperature rise to about 21°C (70°F). Rains are still present but their amount decreases. It is a volatile month where warm sunny days may occur alongside short rain showers.

April

Especially pleasant spring weather visits the area. Temperatures climb to 25°C (77°F) during the day, and humidity is relatively low. This is an ideal time for being outdoors, although occasional early heatwaves may bring haze from the Negev.

May

Temperatures rise to about 28°C (82°F) and days become warm and sunny. Rain almost completely disappears. The atmosphere becomes summer-like, but relative dryness maintains a very comfortable feeling in the shade.

June

June opens the official summer season. Daytime temperatures range around 30°C (86°F), and humidity begins to rise gradually. Skies are completely clear with no chance of precipitation, and heat stress begins to be felt at noon.

July

A very hot and humid month. The average daytime temperature is 31°C (88°F), and nights are warm at about 22°C (72°F). The combination of heat and high humidity creates heavy heat stress felt throughout most of the day.

August

The hottest and most humid month of the year in Yad Mordechai. Temperatures range around 32°C (90°F) during the day, and at night they remain high (about 23°C/73°F). Heat stress is at its peak with no relief from precipitation.

September

The start of autumn brings a gradual relief from the heat. Daytime temperatures drop to 31°C (88°F), and nights become slightly more pleasant toward the end of the month. Humidity is still high, but a decreasing trend is felt.

October

Significant relief in temperatures to an average of 29°C (84°F) during the day. Nights become cool and pleasant (about 18°C/64°F), and the first rains ("Yoreh") may occur. The air becomes clearer and cleaner.

November

Temperatures drop to 24°C (75°F) during the day, and the atmosphere becomes wintry. Rainfall increases significantly, and winds strengthen. This is the transition month when long clothes are gradually worn again.

December

Winter officially returns to Yad Mordechai. Temperatures drop to 20°C (68°F) during the day and 11°C (52°F) at night. Rainy days are frequent and the sky is cloudy most of the time, giving a cold and wet feeling.
