Climate Characteristics of Yotvata

General Overview

Yotvata is characterized by an extreme and hyper-arid desert climate. Its location in the heart of the Arava Valley, far from maritime influence and at a low elevation, creates some of the hottest weather conditions in Israel. The local climate features extreme dryness, intense solar radiation, and significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, as well as between summer and winter.

Summer Season and Warm Months

Summer in Yotvata is exceptionally long and scorching. Daytime temperatures frequently cross the 40°C (104°F) mark and sometimes reach 45°C (113°F) or higher. However, humidity is extremely low (often below 20%), creating a very dry heat. While there is some relief at night, temperatures remain relatively high compared to mountainous regions.

Winter Season and Precipitation

Winter in Yotvata is short and very comfortable during the day but can be quite cold at night. Daytime temperatures range from 20°C to 23°C (68-73°F) under a warm sun, but on clear nights, they can plummet toward 5°C (41°F). Annual precipitation is minimal (averaging about 25 mm), mostly occurring in short, intense bursts that can trigger flash floods in nearby desert washes (wadis).

January

January is the coldest month in Yotvata. Daytime temperatures are very pleasant (about 20°C/68°F), resembling a European spring day, but nights are quite cold, dropping to an average of 7°C (45°F). Skies are mostly clear, making this the ideal season for hiking in the nearby Timna Park.

February

Temperatures begin to rise slightly, but nights remain cold. February is similar to January in its dry and comfortable character. This is a month where the slight chance of rain exists, and if it arrives, it can be accompanied by impressive flash floods in the Arava.

March

In March, the onset of spring is felt as daytime temperatures climb to 25°C (77°F). Nights become less cold (about 12°C/54°F). It is a volatile month where the first "Sharav" (heatwave) events of the season may occur, accompanied by strong southern winds and haze.

April

Temperatures rise sharply, reaching an average of 30°C (86°F) during the day. Nights become very pleasant (about 16°C/61°F). Humidity is zero and radiation is intense. This is the final transition month before the great summer heat.

May

May already feels like full summer in Yotvata. Daytime temperatures reach an average of 35°C (95°F) and the sun is scorching. Rain completely disappears from the forecast, and the air becomes extremely dry.

June

June opens the season of extreme heat. Noon temperatures consistently cross 38°C (100°F). Days are very long and radiation is at its peak. Nights are no longer cold, hovering around 22°C (72°F).

July

July is one of the hottest months. The average daytime temperature is 40°C (104°F), and at peak times, it can reach much higher values. Heat stress is very heavy due to the extreme temperature, despite the low humidity.

August

August continues the streak of extreme heat with temperatures around 40°C (104°F) during the day and 25°C (77°F) at night. Occasionally, this month is slightly more humid than June and July (due to southern flows), making the heat even more oppressive in the evening.

September

In September, a very slight relief is felt, but it remains very hot with daytime temperatures around 37°C (99°F). Nights begin to cool slightly toward the end of the month, and visibility toward the Edom Mountains becomes exceptionally clear and sharp.

October

Significant relief from the heat. Daytime temperatures drop to an average of 32°C (90°F) and nights become pleasant and cool (about 19°C/66°F). This is a month where rare but powerful rain events stemming from the "Red Sea Trough" may occur.

November

Temperatures drop to pleasant values of 25°C (77°F) during the day. The atmosphere becomes autumnal and nights get cold (about 13°C/55°F). This is an excellent time for outdoor activities in the Arava after the scorching summer months.

December

Winter returns to Yotvata. Daytime temperatures are about 21°C (70°F) and nights are cold (about 9°C/48°F). Days are short and mostly sunny, and the air is dry and cold. The desert is very quiet and visibility is at its best.
