Climate Characteristics of Malmö

The "Warmth" of the South

Malmö is Sweden's warmest major city. Located in the far south (Skåne), its climate is maritime-temperate, more akin to northern Germany than the rest of Sweden. Spring arrives here first, and winter is the shortest in the country. However, being very flat and exposed to the Öresund Strait, the city is windy and the weather is highly dynamic.

Winter Without Snow (Mostly)

Unlike Stockholm, a white, snowy winter is relatively rare in Malmö. Daytime temperatures usually stay above freezing (2-3°C/35-37°F). The real challenge is the wind; strong gusts from the strait can make 5°C feel like -5°C. It's a "grey" and wet winter rather than a frozen one.

Moderate Summer and Urban Beaches

Summer in Malmö is among Europe's most pleasant. Temperatures stabilize around 21-23°C (70-73°F). The Western Harbor (Västra Hamnen) and Ribersborg beach become the heart of the city, with residents enjoying the Baltic Sea and long daylight hours.

The warmest and sunniest month. 22°C (72°F) daytime and 14°C (57°F) at night. Perfect for swimming. Light afternoon showers may occur but pass quickly.

Continuation of pleasant summer. 22°C (72°F) daytime. The sea is at its warmest. Festival season is in full swing under warm evening skies.

Early, calm autumn. 17°C (63°F) daytime. Temperatures drop slowly. Clear blue skies are common as foliage begins to turn golden.

October

Cooling and autumn gales. 12°C (54°F) daytime. Rains become more frequent and winds strengthen. A dramatic, atmospheric month.
