Stockholm
Climate Characteristics of Stockholm
General Overview
Stockholm is situated on the east coast of Sweden, where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. Its climate is humid-temperate, heavily influenced by its proximity to water and the Gulf Stream, which moderates the extreme cold expected at such a northern latitude. The city is known for dramatic shifts in daylight—from "White Nights" in summer to very short days in winter.
Temperatures and Daily Variations
In summer (July-August), daytime temperatures range from 20°C to 24°C (68-75°F). In winter, average daytime temperatures are around -1°C (30°F), dropping to -5°C (23°F) at night. Due to the city's island structure, sea winds can significantly affect the "feels like" temperature, though the water prevents the mercury from dropping as low as it does further inland.
Precipitation Seasons (July-August and November)
Surprisingly, summer months are the wettest in Stockholm, with rain typically appearing as short, refreshing showers. In winter, precipitation turns to snow, though in recent years it has become less stable, often melting and refreezing, creating icy conditions in Gamla Stan.
Dry and Comfortable Seasons (May-June)
Late spring and early summer are the sunniest and driest months. This is when the city "wakes up," parks turn lush green, and the lengthening days bring a unique energy to residents and visitors alike.
Weather in Stockholm by Month
